With INEGI´s adhesion, 45 institutions have joined HeForShe in Mexico, which, with a series of commitments to gender equality, have accelerated the pace to achieve a 50-50 Mexico. This, together with individual adhesions, ranks Mexico on the third position of countries conducting the highest number of activities in the campaign.

HeForShe is a movement created by UN Women in order to engage men and boys, together with women, as agents of change for the achievement of gender equality. It aims to build an equal society through an alliance that calls for everyone, emphasizing the partnership with universities, private sectors and government institutions.

The adhesion to the campaign was led by Julio A. Santaella, President of INEGI and Ana Güezmes García, UN Women´s representative in Mexico. The adhesion was witnessed by Luiza Carvalho, Regional Director of UN Women for the Americas and the Caribbean.

They were joined by Lara Blanco, UN Women Regional Deputy Director for the Americas and the Caribbean, Enrique De Alba Guerra Enrique, Vice president of INEGI´s board, and María Isabel Monterrubio Gómez, General Director for Coordination in the National System for Statistics and Geography.

UN Women´s representative in Mexico stated that “INEGI, which is a global reference, adopts a reinforced commitment today to include a gender approach in the production, dissemination and analysis of statistics. The interaction between the production and use of statistics is essential for sustainable development, national policies and budgets, and evaluation and accountability.”

Julio A. Santaella, President of INEGI, thanked the call to continue building an equalitarian society, where the vision of respect and equality is shared. He pointed out that in INEGI “We are convinced that gender equality is an essential issue to address, promote and it compels all of us”.

He said that this adhesion will strengthen the institutionalization of a gender perspective, not only in our professional work, but also in the relationships we maintain throughout INEGI´s community.

Luiza Carvalho, Regional Director of UN Women for the Americas and the Caribbean celebrated the creation of the Global Center of Excellence for Gender Statistics and said that this is “the first center that, together with UN Women, will support countries to foster the production, availability, accessibility and use of high quality data and statistics in order to achieve gender equality and women empowerment, with the objective of supporting the implementation, compliance and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” Among the most important commitments adopted by INEGI:

  1. To promote the Global Center of Excellence for Gender Statistics, which will support the gender statistics development with an SDGs perspective.
  1. To foster the generation of gender-disaggregated information about the behavior of incomes, households’ expenses and unpaid work in the household.
  1. To present, whenever it is possible, INEGI´s statistical results, press releases and other communications with gender disaggregation and perspective.
  1. To foster the generation of gender-disaggregated information about the prevalence and incidence of criminal behaviors in people aged 18 and over.
  1. To disseminate and support the application of the Guidelines for Incorporating a Gender Perspective in the National System for Statistical and Geographical Information.
  1. To make adjustments to INEGI´s website so it can be read with different software, in order to allow people with some kind of disability to access it.
  1. To promote the respect for equality and nondiscrimination principles among its personnel by strengthening internal communication actions focused on information and awareness about the elimination of violence against women.

With this adhesion, INEGI recognizes the key role that gender equality plays in all economic, social and environmental dimensions of social development, and reinforces its commitment to women´s and girls´ rights as well as to the development of statistics with gender perspective.
